Now now, I think some people are being too harsh on Riddle (it's understandable, but hear me out). Riddle once got along with Trey and Chenya at the expense of breaking his mom's rules, and, pray tell, where did that end up to? We couldn't see it in the game because it wasn't illustrated, but in the manga we could see Riddle was crying so hard and Trey's parents were bowing repeatedly to Riddle's mom while Trey could only watch at the sidelines (some even said that Riddle's mom might have done "something' to Trey's family bakery?). And remember, what was being reinforced in little Riddle's mind at the time? "This is the consequences of me breaking the rules. If I didn't break the rules, none of this would have happened. Staying right on track on the rules was the only way for me to live 'safely'. I will never break the rules again." Isn't it obvious why Riddle would show no mercy even to Trey, when Riddle's mom showed no mercy towards himselfーher son? Now, the rest is just a speculation, but I think several scenarios could appear as to why Riddle didn't point Trey directly to be the vice housewarden: 1. Because he was shutting his emotions down and not let anything to make his dedication in following the rules waver, 2. Because he was reminded of the past and didn't really want to get close to Trey for fear of bringing another 'issue' for Trey's family, 3. Because he felt guilty and didn't think it was his place to appoint Trey who might hated him because of their old problem, knowing that vice housewarden's primary job was to help the housewarden, 4. He wanted to give everyone equal chances of wanting the position or not and tried to make the selection fair, 5. It could be any other reasons. The thing is, each characters are complex, and the thread to their relationship has never been so straightforward. Rather, it got tangled up and messy most of the time. We might think that what Riddle did is cruel, but I do think that it was the best solution that he could have ever thought at the time this memory had happened.
